1. Concept (Khái niệm)

Sentence Connectors (từ nối câu / liên từ nối đoạn) là những từ hoặc cụm từ dùng để liên kết hai câu hoặc hai ý độc lập trong văn viết học thuật, giúp người đọc thấy rõ mối quan hệ logic giữa các phần của bài viết.

→ Chúng thường đứng đầu câu hoặc sau dấu chấm phẩy (;) và được theo sau bởi dấu phẩy (,).

Ví dụ khái niệm:
“The experiment was expensive; nonetheless, the results were valuable.”

2. Function Groups (Phân loại theo chức năng)

3. Contrast Connectors (Tương phản)

Dùng để thể hiện hai ý trái ngược hoặc mâu thuẫn nhau.

• however – “It was raining; however, they went hiking.”
• nevertheless / nonetheless – “The task was complex; nonetheless, he completed it on time.”
• whereas / while – dùng để đối chiếu hai vế trong cùng câu: “She enjoys parties, whereas he prefers quiet evenings.”
• on the other hand – dùng để trình bày khía cạnh đối lập: “Online learning is convenient; on the other hand, it reduces social interaction.”
• in contrast – nhấn mạnh sự khác biệt rõ ràng: “Urban areas are crowded; in contrast, rural regions are peaceful.”

4. Result & Effect Connectors (Nguyên nhân – Kết quả)

Biểu thị kết quả hoặc hậu quả của một hành động / hiện tượng.

• therefore – kết luận logic: “The model failed to predict; therefore, it was revised.”
• thus – trang trọng, dùng nhiều trong học thuật: “It was dark; thus, we used flashlights.”
• hence – đồng nghĩa với “therefore” nhưng trang trọng hơn: “She studied hard; hence, her success.”
• consequently – nhấn mạnh hậu quả trực tiếp: “The demand increased; consequently, prices rose.”
• as a result / for this reason – “The company expanded rapidly; as a result, it needed more staff.”

5. Addition Connectors (Bổ sung ý)

Giúp mở rộng, thêm thông tin hoặc củng cố ý trước.

• furthermore – “The solution is simple; furthermore, it is effective.”
• moreover – nhấn mạnh thông tin thêm có giá trị tương đương: “The proposal is realistic; moreover, it is affordable.”
• in addition – “He works full-time. In addition, he studies at night.”
• besides / what is more – thêm vào điều đã nêu, thường trong văn phong ít trang trọng hơn.

• although / even though – “Although it was late, he kept working.”
• despite / in spite of + N/V-ing – “Despite the noise, I managed to sleep.”
• still / yet – “The project was risky; still, investors supported it.”

8. Time / Sequence Connectors (Trình tự – thời gian)

• firstly / secondly / finally – “Firstly, we analyzed data. Secondly, we tested the model.”
• subsequently / afterwards – “The report was written; subsequently, it was reviewed.”
• meanwhile – “He was studying; meanwhile, his friends were playing.”
• eventually – “After many attempts, they eventually succeeded.”

• to sum up / all in all – ít trang trọng hơn nhưng tự nhiên: “To sum up, education remains vital.”

11. Punctuation Rule (Dấu câu khi dùng connectors)

• Nếu nối hai mệnh đề độc lập → dùng dấu chấm phẩy (;) + connector + dấu phẩy (,)
  Ví dụ: “The data were inaccurate; therefore, the study was repeated.”
• Nếu bắt đầu câu mới → đặt connector ở đầu câu, theo sau bằng dấu phẩy (,).
  Ví dụ: “However, more research is needed.”
• Nếu dùng trong cùng câu (trước mệnh đề phụ) → không cần dấu phẩy ở trước.
  Ví dụ: “We continued the test although it was raining.”

• ❌ Dùng hai từ nối cùng lúc: “Although it rained, but we stayed.” → ✅ “Although it rained, we stayed.”
• ❌ Bỏ dấu phẩy sau connector: “However we continued.” → ✅ “However, we continued.”
• ❌ Dùng sai loại connector theo ý nghĩa logic: “It was cold; therefore, I wore a T-shirt.” ❌
• ❌ Lặp từ nối: “Therefore... therefore...” trong cùng đoạn.
