1. Concept (Khái niệm)

Academic Linking Devices (từ nối học thuật) là những cụm từ được dùng để nối các ý, câu hoặc đoạn văn trong văn phong trang trọng (formal/academic writing). Chúng giúp bài viết trở nên logic, mạch lạc, và có tính liên kết cao (cohesion & coherence) — đặc biệt quan trọng trong IELTS Writing Task 2, essays, và reports.

→ Mục tiêu: dùng đúng nhóm từ nối theo chức năng – thêm ý, đối lập, nguyên nhân, kết quả, ví dụ, nhấn mạnh, kết luận.

2. Function Categories (Phân loại theo chức năng)

3. Addition – Bổ sung ý

• in addition – bổ sung thông tin mới cùng hướng: “The policy reduces costs. In addition, it improves efficiency.”
• furthermore – dùng trong văn phong học thuật: “The method is reliable; furthermore, it is cost-effective.”
• moreover – thêm ý mạnh hơn ý trước: “The study is well-designed; moreover, it provides practical implications.”
• besides – thêm vào điều đã nêu, thường trong văn nói hoặc viết bán trang trọng.

4. Contrast – Diễn tả đối lập hoặc khác biệt

• however – chuyển hướng ý: “The results were expected; however, the data showed inconsistencies.”
• nevertheless / nonetheless – vẫn đúng dù có sự đối lập: “The task was difficult; nevertheless, she completed it successfully.”
• on the other hand – trình bày mặt đối lập: “Online learning is flexible; on the other hand, it requires self-discipline.”
• in contrast – nhấn mạnh sự khác biệt rõ rệt: “Urban areas are overcrowded; in contrast, rural regions remain sparsely populated.”

5. Cause & Reason – Chỉ nguyên nhân / lý do

• because / since / as – nối mệnh đề nguyên nhân: “The meeting was cancelled because of bad weather.”
• due to / owing to / because of – đi với danh từ / V-ing: “The project failed due to lack of funding.”
• in view of – trang trọng, dùng trong báo cáo: “In view of recent findings, the theory was revised.”

6. Result & Consequence – Chỉ kết quả / hệ quả

• therefore – kết luận logic: “The experiment was flawed; therefore, the results are unreliable.”
• thus – trang trọng, thường dùng trong writing: “The evidence was strong; thus, the hypothesis was accepted.”
• consequently – nhấn mạnh hệ quả trực tiếp: “The factory closed; consequently, hundreds lost their jobs.”
• as a result / hence – kết quả tự nhiên: “Demand rose sharply; as a result, prices increased.”

7. Example & Illustration – Đưa ví dụ / minh họa

• for example / for instance – đưa ví dụ cụ thể: “Many animals are endangered; for example, tigers and rhinos.”
• namely – liệt kê cụ thể hóa: “Three cities were chosen, namely Paris, Rome, and Berlin.”
• particularly / especially – nhấn mạnh điểm nổi bật: “This is important, especially for young learners.”

8. Emphasis – Nhấn mạnh ý

• indeed – xác nhận và củng cố lập luận: “It is a difficult task; indeed, it may be impossible.”
• in fact – nhấn mạnh hoặc làm rõ hơn điều vừa nói: “The theory is outdated; in fact, it was disproved long ago.”
• significantly / notably / importantly – dùng trong writing formal để chỉ điểm nổi bật.

9. Comparison – So sánh tương tự

• similarly / likewise / in the same way – nối hai ý giống nhau: “The first method was effective; similarly, the second produced consistent results.”

10. Time / Sequence – Trình tự ý hoặc thời gian

• firstly / secondly / finally – dùng để liệt kê luận điểm trong essay.
• subsequently / meanwhile / eventually – dùng để nối ý trong mô tả quá trình (process, report).

11. Conclusion / Summary – Kết luận hoặc tổng kết

• in conclusion / to conclude / to sum up – kết luận phần bài.
• overall / in summary / all in all – tổng hợp toàn bài.
• to recap / in short – tóm tắt nhanh, ít trang trọng hơn.

12. Common Mistakes (Các lỗi thường gặp)

• ❌ Dùng “so” hoặc “and” quá thường xuyên → thay bằng “therefore”, “furthermore”.
• ❌ Dùng cùng lúc hai từ nối tương tự: “However, but we...” ❌ → Chỉ chọn một.
• ❌ Dùng linking words không phù hợp ngữ cảnh (e.g. “because” trong academic essay nên thay bằng “since” hoặc “as”).
• ❌ Thiếu dấu phẩy / dấu chấm khi chuyển đổi câu độc lập: “It was raining, however we went.” ❌ → “It was raining; however, we went.” ✅
