1. Concept (Khái niệm)

Linking words (từ nối) và conjunctions (liên từ) là công cụ giúp kết nối các mệnh đề, câu và đoạn văn nhằm diễn đạt mạch lạc và logic. Chúng thể hiện các mối quan hệ như: tương phản, nguyên nhân, mục đích, kết quả.

→ Ở trình độ C1, người học cần dùng linh hoạt để nâng cao cohesion & coherence (tính liên kết và mạch lạc) trong viết và nói.

2. Classification (Phân loại chính)

3. Contrast (Tương phản)

A. Coordinating & Subordinating Conjunctions

• but – đơn giản, dùng trong câu nói thường: “She is rich, but not happy.”
• although / though / even though – + clause → “Although it was raining, we went out.”
• whereas / while – đối chiếu 2 vế: “Whereas I prefer tea, he likes coffee.”

B. Linking Adverbs

• however / nevertheless / nonetheless – trang trọng, nối 2 câu: “It was raining; however, we continued our journey.”
• in contrast / on the other hand – diễn tả sự đối chiếu giữa hai ý: “He is very active. In contrast, his brother is quite lazy.”

C. Prepositional Phrases

• despite / in spite of + noun / V-ing: “Despite the rain, we went out.”
• contrary to: “Contrary to expectations, sales increased.”

4. Cause / Reason (Nguyên nhân)

A. Conjunctions

• because – chỉ nguyên nhân trực tiếp: “We stayed home because it was raining.”
• as / since – chỉ lý do rõ ràng, thường ở đầu câu: “As it was late, we decided to leave.”

B. Prepositions

• because of / due to / owing to + noun/V-ing “The flight was cancelled due to bad weather.”

C. Adverbial Phrases

• for this reason / that’s why / as a result of “He was ill; for this reason, he stayed in bed.”

5. Purpose (Mục đích)

A. To + infinitive

→ Dạng ngắn gọn, thông dụng: “He left early to catch the train.”

B. In order to / so as to + V

→ Trang trọng hơn “to”: “She studies hard in order to pass the exam.”

C. So that / In order that + clause

→ Dùng với chủ ngữ khác, có thể kèm “can/could/would”: “She spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.”

D. For + noun / V-ing

→ Dùng khi nói chung về mục đích: “This tool is for cutting paper.”

6. Result / Effect (Kết quả)

A. Coordinating Conjunctions

• so – nối 2 mệnh đề: “It was late, so we went home.”

B. Linking Adverbs

• therefore / thus / consequently / hence / as a result “He didn’t study; therefore, he failed the exam.”

C. Structures “so...that / such...that”

• so + adj/adv + that → “The test was so difficult that many failed.”
• such + (a/an) + adj + noun + that → “It was such a long day that I fell asleep early.”

8. Common Mistakes (Các lỗi thường gặp)

• ❌ Dùng sai giới từ: “Because of he was late” ❌ → ✅ “Because he was late” / “Because of his lateness.”
• ❌ Dùng “so” mà không có kết quả thật: “It was raining, so.” ❌ → Cần thêm mệnh đề sau.
• ❌ Dùng “although” và “but” cùng lúc: “Although it rained, but we went out.” ❌ → Chọn 1 trong 2.
• ❌ Lẫn lộn “such” và “so”: “It was so beautiful scenery.” ❌ → ✅ “It was such beautiful scenery.”
