LÝ THUYẾT

I. Liên từ đẳng lập (Coordinating Conjunctions)

Bộ FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so – nối hai thành phần ngang hàng.

Liên từ	Nghĩa	Ví dụ
and	và	I like tea and coffee.
but	nhưng	He is poor, but happy.
or	hoặc	Would you like tea or coffee?
so	nên, vì thế	It rained, so we stayed home.
for	vì	We left early, for it was late.
nor	cũng không	He doesn’t eat meat, nor does he drink milk.
yet	nhưng mà (tương phản)	She is small, yet strong.

II. Liên từ phụ thuộc (Subordinating Conjunctions)

Nối mệnh đề phụ với mệnh đề chính, biểu thị quan hệ ý nghĩa.

1) Nguyên nhân – Kết quả

because (bởi vì): She stayed home because she was sick.
since (vì, do): Since you’re here, let’s start.
as (vì, do): As it was late, we went home.
now that (giờ thì, bởi vì bây giờ): Now that he’s retired, he can travel.

2) Mục đích

so that (để mà): I spoke slowly so that he could understand.
in order that (để mà): He works hard in order that he can buy a car.

3) Thời gian

when (khi): I was reading when he called.
while (trong khi): She cooked while I cleaned.
before / after: Wash your hands before you eat. We’ll go out after it stops raining.
until / till (cho đến khi): Wait here until I come back.
as soon as (ngay khi): Call me as soon as you arrive.
once (một khi): Once you start, you can’t stop.

4) Điều kiện

if (nếu): If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
unless (trừ khi): We won’t go unless it stops raining.
provided (that) / as long as (miễn là): You can stay as long as you are quiet.
in case (phòng khi): Take an umbrella in case it rains.
even if (ngay cả khi): Even if it rains, we’ll go out.

5) Tương phản / Nhượng bộ

although / though (mặc dù): Although it was raining, we went out.
even though (mặc dù – nhấn mạnh): Even though he was tired, he kept working.
whereas / while (trong khi – so sánh trái ngược): Whereas he’s tall, I’m short.

6) Kết quả: so...that / such...that

so + adj/adv + that: She was so tired that she couldn’t walk.
such + (a/an) + adj + noun + that: It was such a cold day that we stayed inside.

III. Liên từ tương quan (Correlative Conjunctions)

both ... and (cả ... và): Both my brother and my sister are doctors.
either ... or (hoặc ... hoặc): You can either stay here or come with us.
neither ... nor (không ... cũng không): He likes neither tea nor coffee.
not only ... but also (không chỉ ... mà còn): She is not only kind but also smart.
whether ... or (dù ... hay): Whether you like it or not, we must go.

Lưu ý đảo ngữ với “Not only” đầu câu: Not only + trợ động từ + S + V, but also ...
Ví dụ: Not only did he study hard, but he also passed the exam.

IV. Từ nối kết luận / bổ sung (B1+)

however (tuy nhiên): She’s nice. However, she’s a bit shy.
therefore / consequently (vì vậy / hệ quả là): He was lazy; therefore, he failed.
moreover / furthermore (hơn nữa): He’s rich; moreover, he’s generous.
otherwise (nếu không thì): Hurry up, otherwise we’ll be late.
meanwhile (trong lúc đó): I was cooking; meanwhile, he was cleaning.
